Motivation & Qualifications
Our historians Jonathan Mackman and Claire Noble qualified in the United Kingdom at universities founded in the 1960s. Jonathan’s background from York is pure history while Claire’s background from UEA (Norwich) takes a cultural approach with literature, art and history. Claire is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Jonathan is an officer on the Council of the British Association for Local History. He is currently serving on its Outreach advisory committee (2017/18).
Jonathan and Claire here introduce themselves and give you a taste of their motivation for working in the archives.
What brings our historians to the archives?
Into The Archives
Our historians have nearly fifty years’ collective experience of working with archives in the public and commercial sectors.
Yes, there are lots of documents that do look like they belong in Terry Pratchett’s Unseen University or the Citadel in Game of Thrones. Some libraries still have chained books, such as at Hereford Cathedral.
But most documents that exist in real-space, as opposed to born-digital, look deeply unassuming. Flimsy. Unimportant. That is, until one starts reading.
And a story begins.
